It all started with Demi Moore gracing the cover of a magazine and proudly displaying her 8 month pregnant belly. Since then, bold, stylish, and fun maternity photos have become an essential part of a baby’s first photo album.
We don’t all get the luxury of professional photographers and makeup artists, so here are 5 tips you need to keep in mind to ensure a pregnancy photo that is worthy to be put on the pages of Vogue.
1. Proper Timing
One of the foremost considerations you will have to consider in maternity photography is timing. Since we’re highlighting the belly, waiting for the right time when your belly is large enough to be seen but not too big as to look like you are ready to pop is crucial. Ideally, you should schedule your photo shoot sometime in your 7th or 8th month when your tummy is beautifully full and round.
2. Location, Location, Location
It is also critical that you select the right location that best defines your overall mood and personality.
If this is your first time to take a pregnancy shoot then opting for more controlled environment such as a studio is an ideal option. This way, your photographer gets to tweak the lighting and background according to your liking. Being out of the public eye also allow you to be more daring or goofy with your poses.
Your home is also an excellent option especially if you want to capture this special moment at a place where you will raise your little one.
If you prefer to have your photo taken outdoors, make sure check the weather and security conditions first to avoid wasting your time and effort.
3. Comfort
Pregnancy is a sensitive and vulnerable phase in a woman’s life, which is why it is imperative that you choose a photographer that you are comfortable with. Make sure that you and your photographer have a clear understanding on how you want the entire shoot to go. Do not hesitate to mention any concerns or special requests to avoid getting disappointed when your photo comes out.
4. Your Belly
There are a number of ways by which your photographer can bring out the most attractive angle of your baby bump. Ordinarily, portrait shots focus on the face but in maternity photography, the focus is shifted on your growing belly. Lighting can also do an excellent job at capturing the most dramatic silhouette of your baby bump to create a tasteful and appealing shot.
Make sure to bring several changes of clothing. Rich, solid colors or black are recommended over patterns or white clothes, as the darker colors allow for a greater contrast in color shots, as well as black and white.
5. Love your Body
The best way to capture the very essence of your pregnancy is to embrace your body and let the beauty from within show in your pictures. Look away from the photographer and think about your plans for the baby, and how much joy they will bring into your life. That dreamy, warm, glowing feeling will radiate in every shot taken.
Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, and goes by surprisingly fast. Capture this special moment in a photo you can share with your child for years to come.
