Entrepreneurship is a Team Sport

Founders are almost always entrepreneurs, but most entrepreneurs aren’t always founders. Sometimes, entrepreneurs haven’t experienced the struggle of founders — the struggle to start a business from scratch, often with little cash. Founders are also more likely to understand the importance of teamwork. Few people can create a new business on their own. They need partners, investors, suppliers… is this a finished sentence, or was someone going to add something?

Often, entrepreneurs go it alone.

The truth is, all entrepreneurship is a team sport. Entrepreneurs, like founders, need to collaborate with other people. They need to cooperate. They need to become team members.

Entrepreneurs who think they can do it all on their own will crash and burn. We’ve seen it before, and we’ll see it again. But, take it from us, the most successful entrepreneurs are part of a team. There’s research to back this up. One study finds that collaboration drives workplace performance. This is because collaboration results in shared ideas, shared resources, and shared contacts.

The best founders we know make it their mandate to hire and attract as much talent as they can. We think entrepreneurs should do the same.

Let’s Talk About Teamwork

Think about the world’s biggest entrepreneurs: Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and Oprah Winfrey, to name a few. It might look like all of these entrepreneurs got to the top on their own, but there were plenty of people who helped them along the way.

The best entrepreneurs surround themselves with great people — the industry’s top talent. They share ideas. They collaborate on projects. They inspire each other.

There are only so many hours in a day. To succeed in business, you need to delegate tasks to other people in order to achieve more as a team.

It might be difficult to share responsibility with other people. Perhaps you have a great idea for a new product, and you want to take all the credit. It’s your idea.

But you can still work with other people in your organization to realize your goals.

And there’s no shame in delegating tasks to someone who has a specific set of skills.

Take marketing, for example. Perhaps you have a great idea for a new product. You’re in the product development stage and ready to launch your product to market. The problem is, you’re not sure how to market your idea.

This is where a good marketing team comes in. They will figure out the best ways to promote your product to the greatest number of people. Your product is still “yours.” You’ve just brought in some extra help.

The Benefits of Teamwork

Not everyone knows all of the benefits of teamwork. Here are some that you need to know about:

  • Stress Reduction: Yes, delegating tasks to team members will reduce stress. You’ll have less work to do yourself and you can concentrate on other things in your organization.
  • Better Work/Life Balance: With more people in your team, you will have more time to do the things you love. This can have a positive influence on your work as you will be less stressed out.
  • Greater Chance of Success: Even if you have the perfect product, there could still be room for improvement. When you work in a team, other people will make suggestions that you might not have thought about before. This could result in more sales, for example.

How Do Entrepreneurs Actually Improve Collaboration?

Just hiring team members for the sake of it is no good either. You need to have a proper team management strategy in place so everyone in your organization knows what they are doing.

Using the latest software can help. Collaborative tools provide you with the latest insights into your team so you can improve communication and project management. Team collaboration portals will also improve the way team members share and access information. In today’s world, where many people work from home or in remote locations, you can still improve collaboration with the latest technology. Team collaboration portals will allow your team members to share files and folders wherever they are in the world.

Taskade helps teams stay competitive in this modern environment by cutting down the friction in planning and decision-making, so teams can focus on doing. With your team tasks, notes, and communication all in one place, you can get work done together, faster and smarter.

Become an Inspirational Entrepreneur

Another way to improve collaboration between team members is to inspire them. The world’s best entrepreneurs share their skills and knowledge so others can learn from their past successes (and mistakes!).

Take entrepreneur Howard Panes, for example. He co-invented Stealth Body Fitness, which gamifies ab workouts — it’s generated millions of sales. However, just a few years ago, Howard was broke, going through a divorce, and had to borrow $10,000 from his father. But he didn’t give up. He wanted to succeed. He wanted to transform the fitness industry. With will and determination, he did exactly that, and now he inspires the people who work for his company.

Don’t listen to what other people say. You shouldn’t go it alone in business. At some point, you will need to work with someone else because they have the resources, skills, or contacts to move your business forward. Entrepreneurship isn’t something you can do by yourself. It’s a team sport.
