How To Create Your Next Photography Logo

Designing a logo is often the first step making your vision of owning a business become a reality. As a photographer, I felt confident that I had the artistic eye to create my own logo. It wasn’t long into the process that I realised creating a beautiful logo is not that easy. It takes more than just making a design look pretty. The logo needs to communicate your company’s ideals, services and values. This is when I started searching out some services online and came across a lot more options than I was expecting. There are thousands of custom design services, logo makers, free templates and AI design generators to pick from.

Luckily for you, I analysed 3 types of logo design services I have used in the past.

Agency Services

Agency services might be the best option to design a logo. Experienced designers will take on your project and discuss your vision and brand. They will typically provide you with 5 concepts that you can review. You will be able to give them feedback and have them revise the existing concepts to perfect your brand.

The downfall of agencies is that they are incredibly expensive and time consuming. If this is the route you choose, make sure you have a budget of $2000 or more and at least 2-3 weeks for turnaround time.

Freelancer

Freelancers function in similar ways as agencies but branding projects are usually more affordable. You can search for designers based on skill set and price range on platforms like Guru. Be sure to only fund escrow when working with designers so you have some discourse in case there are issues with the designs.

Logo projects with freelancers can range from $20 – $500. Be sure to vet the designers carefully as the designers ability can be difficult to assess. Ask for photography specific logo samples from their portfolio.

Free Templates

The beauty of being a photographer is we have the ability to use Photoshop. There are thousands of free photography logo templates available on sites like GraphicSprings. Just search for specific keywords and find a logo template that suits your brand. You can download the PSD file and make the basic changes like changing colors and adding your company name. This option is free provided you have Photoshop on your computer but be sure to take your time in selecting a logo. Free templates are great to start out but you want to be sure your brand has the quality logo it deserves.

Keep in mind that design and branding is not something that you should skimp on. As photographers, we know that time is money and if you want a world-class logo, you cannot expect it to be free. If you have the budget to hire and agency I would also recommend that first. However, there are lots of options for getting a great logo on a smaller budget so be sure to do your own research and get started today!
