8 Web Design Mistakes To Avoid

If you want to create a web site, keep these tips into account because they can make a difference between a good and a bad project.

1. Content. Break up your content into bullet points or paragraphs to make it easy to read. Make sure the content is “above the fold”. You can do this by not having a large logo or ads beneath your logo. You visitors shouldn’t need to scroll down to see the content.

2. Navigation. Visitors often leave a site because it’s unclear what they’re supposed to do next. Offer them suggestions like related content, popular posts and categories.

3. Color. For text based sites, have a white background and black text. This combination is the easiest on the eyes. It’s the most popular combination because it works.

4. Windows. Don’t open links in new windows. Surfers are savvy enough to do that if they want to. In other words, don’t use target=_blank, even for external links. If your site is good the visitor will hit the back button to come back.

5. Contact. Have a contact page. There are countless reasons to have one. It allows your visitors to send in suggestions on your site or notify you of errors. It allows other webmasters to contact you for joint ventures. It allows advertisers to contact you about ad spots on your site. If you’re selling a product, having a contact page builds trust in the customer.

6. Media. Having audio or video playing automatically is annoying. Allow your visitor the option to play the file if they want to. Playing background music on your site is never a good idea.

7. Flash. Don’t use Flash on your sites, as it affects load times and iPhone/iPad viewers can’t see it.

8. Splash. Don’t use a splash page before your main page. Visitors would rather leave than have to deal with an intro page.
